Dear Sisters,

It has never been more important that we keep abreast on the legislation that affects our Veterans and Active Service Personnel. We need to be more pro-active when legislation is introduced that affects their benefits. Our voices do count, but only if we contact our Senators and Congresswomen to let our views be known. We are all aware of the crisis that faces our nations, regarding the budget. The main goal of the VFW is to not lose ground on the entitlement programs that our VETERANS have earned.

The VFW has established the Legislative Priority Goals for 2011.

The list of the goals are:
VA Health Care
VA Benefits and Compensation
Seamless Transition
Military Quality of Life
Veterans Employment
Defense and Homeland Security
Military Affairs
POW/MIA

The VFW has numerous ways to keep current on bills that are being introduced in Congress. We can sign up for the VFW Washington Weekly online, the Checkpoint Newsletter. The VFW has the National Legislative Service Office in Washington DC, that acts on our Veterans benefits. Information on issues facing our Veterans and active Service personnel are posted on the vfw.org web-site. You can check on the record of our elected officials by going to thomas.loc.gov/home/rollcallvotes.html or www.senate.giv/reference/common.faq/how_to_votes.htm

Encourage returning service personnel and veterans to sign up with the VA upon returning from active duty. During each conflict or war there has been numerous health issues that have been created and can continue for a life time. The obligations remains ever present that our veterans to be taken care of long after they have defended our great nation. It's Time to "Step Up-Leave No Veteran Behind" to receive the benefits promised them.

Loyally,

Sandy Slaymaker
Department of WY
Legislative Chairman

Legislative Summary

Legislative Program

The goals of the Legislative program are to keep members up-to-date on all issues and pending bills relating to veterans, their dependents, active-duty military, and national security; to let legislators know our views regarding such legislation; and hold them accountable for honoring America’s promises to veterans.

History

The Legislative program got its start in 1928 at which time it was called Legislation. As the years have gone by, the Ladies Auxiliary VFW has progressed greatly with letter-writing, personal contacts, e-mails, and invitations to legislators to attend our functions so that we can share our views with them and they can tell us their positions of veterans’ issues.
